(February 26, 2026 · The Encouragement of the Holy Spirit)
At the start of a new year, people often celebrate with joy because a new year seems to bring hope. They hope that the bad things from the past will leave and that good things will come to them, as if they can have a brand-new beginning. But is that really so? Can a person truly change just because of words of blessing? Will the desires in one’s heart always come to pass?
Look at the world around us. The environment is still dangerous, human hearts remain corrupted, and our bodies continue to decline. We must understand that our days are in God’s hands; people simply count time according to the years they have been given. When one year passes and another begins, it only means that we are one step closer to the end of our lives. In this world, what truly becomes new or better? Everything will eventually grow old. Changing the calendar does not mean the path of life becomes different, nor does it mean circumstances will improve. Time keeps passing, and the world continues to grow old.
Those who believe in the Lord should reflect on what truly makes something “new.” It is not the new year, human traditions, or celebrations that make things new. A wise person looks with spiritual eyes and considers how to be renewed, examining how to become a new person in the Lord and receive a renewed life. If someone truly wants change, they must repent in the Lord. Their thoughts and direction must turn—from heading toward the world to returning to the God in heaven. They must leave behind their old sinful nature, remove the uncleanness within, and turn their heart to the Lord so that He may cleanse and renew them. Only after a genuine turning back can there be a new beginning.
The New Year is not simply a holiday that follows worldly customs, meant only for celebration, pleasure, and satisfying personal desires. It is not a day to pray for good luck, wealth, or a better life through external means. These are things valued by those who do not know God. After the celebration and the prayers, people still live the same old life, and nothing truly changes. Therefore, in My view, these things are without benefit. They are like chasing the wind—fleeting and impossible to hold on to, no matter how hard a person tries.
When the New Year comes, we should see more clearly how short life is. Time is limited, so we must number our days and reflect on how we ought to live, so that we do not fall into emptiness. We should look up to the mercy of God in heaven, because our hope is not in this world—not in the wealth in our hands and not in our own plans—but in the eternal and unchanging God.
In the new year, we should remember the Lord’s salvation and reflect on whether we have lived as new creations in Him. We should resolve to pursue eternal life in the Lord and become holy people who belong to God’s kingdom. Each day we can live out a new life, no longer controlled by the old self under sin. For the children of God do not belong to this world. They have left the old path of sinners and are walking toward a life with the Lord’s presence—a life that receives new life in Him. In the Lord there is a new heart, a new spirit, a new direction in life, and a new life altogether.
Scripture
Job
Chapter 14 Verses 1-2,5
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:
he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee,
thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.
Jeremiah
Chapter 6 Verse 16
Thus saith the LORD,
Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths,
where is the good way, and walk therein,
and ye shall find rest for your souls.
Ezekiel
Chapter 36 Verses 26-27
A new heart also will I give you,
and a new spirit will I put within you:
and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh,
and I will give you an heart of flesh.
And I will put my spirit within you,
and cause you to walk in my statutes,
and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
Psalms
Chapter 40 Verses 2-3
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my goings.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth,
even praise unto our God:
many shall see it, and fear,
and shall trust in the LORD.
