Stay Watchful and Alert, Learn from the Lessons of Those Before Us, and Keep Away from Sin (Part 1)

If those who believe in the Lord want to hold firmly to their faith, they should learn from the lessons of those who came before them.

For example, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah lived in great sin for a long time. They were proud and self-satisfied. They had plenty, yet they showed no mercy to the poor. They lived in comfort, yet did not help the weak and those in need. They also gave themselves over to lust, sexual immorality, and unnatural desires. They did evil things that God hates, and they kept on living in corruption without repenting. Because of this, people must face the results of what they have sown in this life and suffer the punishment of eternal fire. Those two cities were also burned and turned to ashes because of it.

In the same way, after God led His people out of Egypt, they were destroyed in the wilderness because of their unbelief and rebellion.

All these things happened because people allowed themselves to be defiled. Sin corrupted their spiritual lives, and they treated God’s authority with contempt, refusing to fear Him as God.

All of this has become a warning to later generations, showing God’s righteous judgment and sending a warning to the world. If people still have the chance to repent and turn back to God, yet refuse to do so, and continue living in sin and unrighteousness, they too will one day face the same ending. If sin is not forgiven, a person cannot enter the glorious and holy kingdom of heaven, nor can they receive eternal life.

Faith is not being cold and indifferent, treating salvation as something optional. It is not just saying with your mouth that you believe in the Lord while your life has no real connection with Him. Their heart still lives in the world and is not set apart as holy. Their thoughts and values still come from the world, they live by human standards, follow their own desires, and walk on a path that does not please God.

A person who believes in the Lord and has been baptized into His name ought to live a clean and holy life, yet then goes back again into uncleanness.

After believing in the Lord, we must pursue holiness. We must carefully discern the things of God, understand the truth and God’s will, and know His love within the truth. God loved us first. His salvation was already determined before the foundation of the world in order to save mankind from sin and death. The Lord gave Himself for us, and He has also given us His Spirit, so that we may know that we abide in Him, and He abides in us. Because of the Lord’s love, we also should deny ourselves, cast away pride and love for the world, lay down self, and let the Lord Jesus rule over every day of our lives, so that we may become children accepted by God until the day He returns.

Chapter 16 Verses 49-50

“Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters,

neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me:

therefore I took them away as I saw good.”

Numbers

Chapter 14 Verses 22-24

“Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness,

and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers,

neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully,

him will I bring into the land whereinto he went;

and his seed shall possess it.”

1 Corinthians

Chapter 6 Verses 9-12

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus,

and by the Spirit of our God.

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient:

all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”
