(August 19, 2026. Comfort from the Holy Spirit)

As we reflect on the ten plagues of Egypt, we see that God protected His people through the blood of the lamb, delivered them from slavery in Egypt, and led them out of Egypt. This also reminds us who have been redeemed by the Lord today that since we have chosen to follow the Lord Jesus, we should know that we no longer belong to ourselves, but to the Lord. The goal of our faith is to enter the eternal life that God has promised. Therefore, we must not continue to long for our former life of sin. We should also examine ourselves often: Is there still any old leaven left in our lives? Are there still thoughts, sinful desires, or actions that do not please God that we have not removed? Therefore, we should not only think about what we have already received, but also carefully examine our lives to see what still needs to be removed.

God commanded His people to eat unleavened bread and not to eat anything made with leaven. Anyone who ate anything with leaven was to be cut off from among the people. This also helps us understand that God wants people to turn away from sin and pursue holiness, and He does not want the sins of the old life to remain. Even sins that are not easily noticed by others, wrong thoughts, and habits that do not please God must not be taken lightly. If we allow sin to remain in us, it is like a little leaven that gradually spreads, affecting our thoughts and actions and even influencing those around us. We must examine ourselves according to the truth and remove any old leaven that still remains in our lives.

We must understand the importance of removing impurity from our lives and not hesitate when it comes to things that should be given up. We should examine ourselves to see whether we still have jealousy, pride, greed, rivalry, or an unforgiving heart, or whether we still love money, fame, status, and pleasure and are drawn by the desires of the world. We should also pay attention to whether we still have old habits such as lying, anger, hurting others, or dishonesty. We must not think that just because we have not committed sins that people consider serious, there is nothing impure left in our lives that needs to be removed. Some old leaven is hidden deep within the heart, such as resentment that we have held on to for a long time, our own pride, or jealousy toward others. Whatever we know does not please God should be given up. If we are willing to deny ourselves for the Lord, obey God’s commandments, and give up the pleasures of sin and our love for the world, we should know that God’s mercy and love, the grace He gives, and the eternal life He has promised are far greater than anything temporary this world can offer.

We should always honestly face our own problems before God. When a person’s heart is truly renewed, outward behavior will also change, because everything we do in life flows from the heart. We must not focus only on outward behavior while neglecting the transformation of our inner life.

What God wants is for people to turn away from sin and no longer be entangled by it, so that they will not be led by sin toward eternal destruction, but instead receive life in the Lord, become holy, prepare to enter God’s holy kingdom, and receive the eternal life that God has promised.

Scripture

Exodus
Chapter 12 Verses 15, 17, 19

Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread;
even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses:
for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day,
that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread;
for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt:
therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses:
for whosoever eateth that which is leavened,
even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel,
whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.

1 Corinthians
Chapter 5 Verses 6-8

Your glorying is not good.
Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

Purge out therefore the old leaven,
that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.
For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Therefore let us keep the feast,
not with old leaven,
neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness;
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Romans
Chapter 6 Verses 22-23

But now being made free from sin,
and become servants to God,
ye have your fruit unto holiness,
and the end everlasting life.

For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
